Slate

Slate Terms of Service

These Terms are the agreement between you and Alternate Reality Media Ltd for using Slate. They explain what we do, what you can expect from us, and what we expect from you.

1. Who we are

Slate is made by Alternate Reality Media Ltd ("Alternate Reality", "we", "us").

2. What Slate is

Slate helps you make short videos for your business. It:

  • writes scripts in your voice;
  • coaches you while you record on your phone;
  • edits your takes into finished videos;
  • makes AI images and videos in Studio;
  • posts to the social accounts you connect.

Slate is in beta. Features will change as we improve it. We'll tell you before we remove anything you pay for. Each edit style shows its usual delivery time before you send a take. Most edits are ready in 15 to 20 minutes, and every edit within 2 working days. If one takes longer, you can cancel it and get its credits back.

3. Who can use Slate

  • You must be 18 or over.
  • Slate is built for business use. Most customers use it to market their business. If you're a business customer, the parts marked "If you're a consumer" don't apply to you, except where the law says they must.
  • If you sign up for a company, you confirm you're allowed to accept these Terms for it.

4. Your account

  • You sign in with your email address and a one-time code, or with Google on the web. Keep your email secure: anyone who can read it can sign in to your Slate.
  • Tell us straight away if you think someone else has used your account.
  • One account is for one person. Don't share it.
  • During the beta, Slate is invite-only. We may limit or close sign-ups at any time.

5. Plans, credits and payment

Plans. Plans are monthly subscriptions. Each includes a number of edit credits and AI credits a month. The current plans and prices are shown before you pay.

Credits.

  • Edit credits pay for edits. A Clean edit is 1 credit, Signature 3, Cinematic 6, an Ad Twin video 2. The first revision on every edit is free, and extra revisions are 1 credit each. Cinematic edits are on the Pro and Founding beta plans. Ad Twin videos can't be revised: change the script and render a new one.
  • AI credits pay for Studio. 1 AI credit is worth 1p. Each generation shows its price before you start.
  • Credits don't expire while your account is open. They have no cash value and can't be transferred. We refund them only as these Terms say, or where the law gives you a refund.
  • If an edit or a Studio generation fails, or a provider's safety filter blocks it, we refund its credits automatically.

Payment.

  • Stripe takes payments. We never see your full card number.
  • In the iPhone app, you can buy plans and credits through the App Store. Apple takes payment, and Apple's terms apply to the purchase. To cancel or ask for a refund, use your Apple ID settings or Apple's Report a Problem page. A plan bought in the app works on the web too, and the reverse.
  • Prices are in pounds and include VAT.
  • Your plan renews every month on the same date until you cancel. We take payment on that date each month.
  • If a payment fails, Stripe tries again and emails you. If it still can't be taken, your plan ends. You keep any credits you already have.

Price changes. We'll email you at least 30 days before your plan's price changes. If you don't want the new price, cancel before it starts.

6. Cancelling and refunds

Cancel any time. On the web, go to Account > Manage billing. Your plan stays active until the end of the month you've paid for, then stops. There are no cancellation fees. If you cancel there within 14 days of subscribing, we treat it as asking for your refund under the next paragraph. A plan bought in the iPhone app is cancelled in your iPhone's Settings, under your name, then Subscriptions.

14 days to change your mind. When you subscribe, you tick a box asking us to start straight away. If you cancel within 14 days, we refund what you paid, minus the value of what you used. For edit credits, that's your plan price divided by its monthly edit credits, for each one you used. AI credits you used cost 1p each. At checkout you also agree that you can't cancel for AI credits once you've used them.

Top-ups. Credits are added straight away. Within 14 days of buying a top-up, you can ask for a refund of the credits you haven't used. For AI credits, you agree at checkout that you can't cancel for the ones you've used.

How to ask. Email us from the address on your account, or use the form at the end of these Terms. Any clear statement works. We refund to the card you paid with, within 14 days of the day you tell us.

If you're a consumer. These rights are in addition to your legal rights. Nothing in these Terms affects them.

If something goes wrong. If an edit or feature doesn't work as described, tell us. We'll fix it or redo it. If we can't, or it takes too long, we'll refund the credits. If you're a consumer, you can ask for your money back instead.

7. Your content

You own your content. Your recordings, scripts, photos, Brand Brain and the videos we make for you are yours. As between you and us, you also own what Slate's AI makes for you, and we give you any rights we have in it.

What you let us do with it. To run Slate, you give us a licence to store, copy, transcribe, edit, adapt and post your content, but only:

  • to provide Slate to you;
  • to post it to the accounts you connect, when and where you tell us to;
  • to keep Slate safe and working.

The licence is worldwide, non-exclusive and free. It ends when you delete the content or your account. It still covers copies already posted to your social accounts, and copies in backups until they're overwritten.

Who sees it. We may watch your edits to check quality before you get them. We don't use your videos in our own marketing unless you say yes in writing.

What you promise. For everything you upload or ask Slate to make, you have the rights you need. That includes music, footage, logos, and anyone else who appears or is named. Getting their permission is your responsibility.

8. AI, your likeness and labels

AI makes mistakes. Scripts, captions, edits and AI images can be wrong, out of date or unsuitable. Check everything before you post, most of all health, money and legal claims, and anything about other people.

Your AI clone and Ad Twin. You can create an AI clone (in Studio) and an Ad Twin from your own photos, video and voice.

  • Only ever create a clone of yourself. Never upload someone else's photos, video or voice to make one.
  • We create a clone only after you confirm your consent on screen, and we keep a record of what you agreed to. You can delete it at any time, and we'll have it deleted at the provider within 30 days.
  • We never use your clone, face or voice to make content for anyone else.
  • Studio and your AI clone run on Higgsfield. Its terms let it use what it receives to improve its services. The Privacy Policy explains this, and we ask for your consent before your content first goes there.

Labels. Many networks require AI-made content to be labelled. When you post content made with Studio, Cinematic edits or Ad Twin, we switch on the network's AI label where the network lets apps set one. Where it doesn't, for example TikTok photos and LinkedIn, say so in your caption. Don't remove labels that the law or a network requires.

Adverts. If a post is an advert or sponsored, say so clearly, as the ASA's CAP Code and each network's rules require. Slate's branded content settings help, but the responsibility is yours.

9. Posting to your social accounts

If you use Slate's YouTube features, you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service.

  • You choose what to post, where and when. We only post what you approve.
  • Each network's own terms apply to what you post there, including:
  • Networks control their own platforms. We're not responsible for their decisions, such as removing posts, limiting reach, rejecting uploads or suspending accounts.
  • We send scheduled posts at the time you pick, or as soon after as we can. Networks can delay or refuse them. If a post fails, we retry, and show you in Slate if it still fails. LinkedIn posts go out straight away for now.
  • You can disconnect a network at any time in Account. That removes our access straight away.

10. Rules for using Slate

Don't use Slate to:

  • break the law, or help anyone else break it;
  • make content that is hateful, harassing or threatening, sexually explicit, or that sexualises anyone under 18;
  • impersonate anyone, or make deepfakes of a real person without their permission;
  • mislead people with fake reviews, false claims, or political content made to deceive;
  • infringe anyone's copyright, trade marks or privacy;
  • send spam, or post to accounts you don't control;
  • break, overload, copy or reverse-engineer Slate, get round its limits, or use other people's accounts or credits;
  • build a competing AI model with Slate's outputs.

We can remove content that breaks these rules, and pause or close accounts that keep breaking them.

11. Our service

  • We'll provide Slate with reasonable care and skill.
  • Slate relies on other services: AI providers, payments and social networks. Sometimes they're down or change how they work. We'll do our best to keep Slate running, but we can't promise it's always available or error-free.
  • We may change Slate to improve it, or because the law or a provider requires it.

12. If you're a consumer: our responsibility to you

  • If we break these Terms or fail to use reasonable care and skill, we're responsible for losses you suffer that were a foreseeable result. Losses are foreseeable if they're an obvious consequence, or if we both knew they might happen when you signed up.
  • We're not responsible for business losses. If you use Slate for a business, section 13 applies instead.
  • We don't exclude liability where it would be unlawful to, for example for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for breaking your legal rights as a consumer.

13. If you're a business customer: limits on liability

  • We're not liable for loss of profit, revenue, business, goodwill or opportunity, or for indirect losses.
  • Our total liability to you for all claims in any 12-month period is limited to the greater of £100 and what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
  • Nothing limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit.
  • You'll cover our reasonable costs if a third party claims against us because of content you uploaded or posted through Slate in breach of these Terms.

14. Ending the agreement

  • You can stop using Slate and delete your account at any time in Account > Your data > Delete account. Deleting cancels your plan straight away and removes your data, as the Privacy Policy explains. Unused credits go with it. If you bought a plan or credits in the last 14 days, ask for your refund before you delete, and we'll refund what you haven't used.
  • We can pause or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms, don't pay, or put others at risk. Unless there's a legal or safety reason not to, we'll tell you first and give you a chance to put it right.
  • We can close Slate altogether with at least 30 days' notice. If we do, we'll refund plan fees for time you've paid for but won't get, and give you time to download your content.

15. The iPhone app

The Slate iPhone app is licensed to you under Apple's standard Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement, along with these Terms. Apple isn't responsible for Slate or its support.

16. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms as Slate or the law changes. We'll email you at least 30 days before a change that affects you, unless it's needed sooner for legal or safety reasons. If you don't agree, you can cancel before the change starts. The version number at the top tells you which Terms you agreed to.

17. Privacy

Our Privacy Policy explains how we use personal data.

18. Law and disputes

  • These Terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
  • If you're a consumer, you can bring a claim in the courts of England and Wales, or in Scotland or Northern Ireland if you live there.
  • Please tell us about any problem first. We'll reply within 5 working days and aim to sort it out within 14 days.
  • If a court finds part of these Terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
  • If we don't enforce a right straight away, we can still enforce it later.
  • Only you and we, and Apple under the licence in section 15, have rights under these Terms. No one else can enforce them.
  • You can't transfer your account or these Terms to anyone else without our written agreement. We may transfer them to a business that takes over Slate. If we do, your rights won't be reduced.
